What to check before you hire in the ACT
The ACT is a special case: on-site systems are only permitted where there's no access to the reticulated sewer network, which in practice means rural blocks and non-urban leases on Canberra's fringe. If your block qualifies, you must apply to the ACT Government for approval under the Public Health Regulation 2000 before installing or altering a septic tank or treatment plant — the health directorate assesses the application. Our ACT approvals guide walks through it.
The plumbing and drainage work itself must be done by a plumber and drainer licensed under the ACT's construction occupations licensing scheme — you can verify a licence through Access Canberra's public register, and you should, because septic work is at the specialised end of the trade. Because the ACT's unsewered market is small, many of the installers, AWTS service agents and vacuum trucks that cover Canberra are actually based over the border — so it's worth checking the NSW directory too, and confirming an NSW-based operator holds the right licence for work on your side of the line.
For system owners, the usual rules of thumb apply: AWTS need regular professional servicing, and conventional tanks need periodic pump-outs — see what a pump-out should cost.
