What to check before you hire in WA
In Western Australia the system comes before the installer: whatever you're quoted must be on the WA Department of Health's list of approved wastewater systems, and you need your local government's approval to construct or install an apparatus for the treatment of sewage before work starts — the process is in our WA approvals guide. The sanitary plumbing and drainage connecting the system must be done by a plumber licensed under WA's plumbing licensing scheme (administered through Building and Energy), so ask for the licence number and check it before signing.
WA calls most aerated systems ATUs — aerobic treatment units — and here servicing is formally regulated: routine services should be done by a service technician authorised by the Department of Health for that type of system, and councils generally require you to keep a maintenance contract in place for the life of the unit. When comparing service contracts, confirm the technician's authorisation covers your brand and that reports go to your local government.
