What to check before you hire in NSW
In NSW, any drainage work on a septic or AWTS must be done by the holder of a plumbing and drainage licence issued through NSW Fair Trading (now administered by Building Commission NSW). You can check any tradesperson's licence for free on the Service NSW licence check. The installation itself also needs your council's approval to install and an ongoing approval to operate under section 68 of the Local Government Act 1993 — the full process is in our NSW approvals guide.
For AWTS servicing, two checks matter. First, the system model must be accredited by NSW Health — councils won't approve unaccredited units. Second, the quarterly service should be done by a competent service technician; many NSW councils keep a list of service agents they recognise for the brands common in their area, so it's worth asking your council who they see reports from. A good agent lodges the service report with council for you — our guide to AWTS requirements explains what each visit should cover.
Pump-out operators should be able to tell you which treatment works accepts their loads. Check our guides on how often to pump out and what it should cost before you book.
