What to check before you hire in Queensland
Septic and AWTS work in Queensland sits under the Plumbing and Drainage Act 2018, and the people doing it must be licensed by the Queensland Building and Construction Commission (QBCC). For a new system or a replacement drainfield, your installer needs a QBCC plumber or drainer licence — and the job itself needs council approval first, which is covered in our Queensland approvals guide.
Servicing is licensed separately. Anyone maintaining an on-site sewage facility — including the quarterly service your AWTS needs — must hold a QBCC drainer licence covering on-site sewage, or the occupational restricted drainer (on-site sewage facility) licence, a class QBCC issues specifically for treatment-plant maintenance. Before you sign a service contract, look the business up on QBCC's free online licence register and confirm the class covers on-site sewage work — a general plumbing licence alone isn't the full story.
For pump-outs, ask where the waste is taken: septage is regulated waste in Queensland and must go to an approved facility, so a legitimate operator will name the treatment plant they cart to. Our guides to pump-out frequency and pump-out costs cover what a fair price looks like.
