What to check before you hire in South Australia
South Australia runs on-site systems under the SA Health On-site Wastewater Systems Code. Before anything goes in the ground you need a wastewater works approval — usually from your local council, or SA Health for larger systems — and the system itself must be a product approved under the code. Our SA approvals guide walks through the application.
The installation work must be carried out by a plumber licensed in South Australia through Consumer and Business Services (CBS), so ask for the licence number and check it on the CBS public register before you commit. A good installer will also handle the works approval paperwork and the final council inspection as part of the quote — confirm that up front, because system costs quoted without the approvals work aren't comparable.
If you own an aerobic (aerated) system, your approval conditions require ongoing servicing — SA practice is regular scheduled visits under a maintenance contract with a technician trained on your brand, with reports available to council on request. Our AWTS servicing guide and servicing cost guide cover what to expect. For pump-outs, ask the operator which approved facility takes the septage, and see how often a tank actually needs it.
