When the system serves more than 40 equivalent persons (over about 6,000 L/day), or when the property is in an unincorporated area with no council. Everything household-scale inside a council area goes through the council.
What is a CWMS and does it change my approval?
A Community Wastewater Management Scheme collects septic tank effluent into a council network. You still need approval for your on-property tank and connection, but there's no land application area - the council's scheme rules apply instead.
Can I install a system that isn't on SA Health's approved list?
Not for standard household approvals - councils approve installations of approved products. A genuinely novel system means the manufacturer (or you) pursuing product approval with SA Health first, which is a much longer road.
