What to check before you hire in Victoria
Victorian septic work is a two-permission job. The property owner needs a permit from council to install or alter the system (issued under the Environment Protection Act 2017 for systems treating under 5,000 litres a day), and the person doing the work must be a plumber licensed or registered with the Building and Plumbing Commission (which took over plumbing registration from the Victorian Building Authority) in the classes covering sanitary and drainage work. Check the practitioner register before you hire, and see our Victorian approvals guide for the permit process, including the land capability assessment most councils ask for.
On completion your plumber must certify the work with a compliance certificate — keep it, because council needs it before issuing the approval to use the system. For AWTS owners, servicing obligations are written into your council permit conditions, typically quarterly visits by an agent competent with your brand who reports to council; our AWTS servicing guide covers what each visit should include and what a fair servicing price looks like.
Pump-out operators cart septage to approved treatment facilities — ask where your load is going. See pump-out frequency for how often a Victorian tank really needs desludging.
