What to check before you hire in Tasmania

In Tasmania, installing or altering any on-site wastewater system needs a plumbing permit from your council's permit authority before work begins, and the installation must be done by a plumber licensed through Consumer, Building and Occupational Services (CBOS) and qualified for wastewater work. You can verify any licence on the CBOS occupational licence search. The system itself matters too: septic tanks and AWTS sold in Tasmania go through CBOS wastewater product accreditation, so ask your installer to confirm the model is accredited. Our Tasmanian approvals guide covers the permit steps and the site assessment councils expect.

AWTS owners sign up for real ongoing obligations here: councils such as Sorell require a formal maintenance contract, typically four services a year, with a servicing receipt provided after every visit and a copy of the contract lodged with council. Before choosing an agent, check they cover your brand and your area — the AWTS servicing guide and service contract guide explain what you're agreeing to and what it should cost.

Pump-out access matters on Tasmanian blocks — steep, wet sites can beat a vacuum truck, so describe your access honestly when booking. See pump-out frequency for timing.
