Composting toilets: waterless systems, honestly explained

A composting toilet takes the biggest, dirtiest waste stream — toilet waste — out of your wastewater equation entirely, using no water and no trenches. For off-grid builds, tank-water households and blocks where a full septic won't fit or won't pass, that's genuinely attractive. But two honest caveats up front: someone has to manage and empty the compost, and your showers, sinks and laundry still produce greywater that the council will insist is dealt with properly. A composting toilet is half a wastewater solution, not all of one.

How composting toilets work

Instead of flushing, waste drops into a ventilated chamber where aerobic microbes, added bulking material (sawdust, coir) and time break it down into a soil-like compost. A vent stack — usually with a small 12 V or mains fan drawing a few watts — keeps air moving through the chamber, which is what keeps a well-run unit odour-free; the bathroom is under slight negative pressure, so smells go up the pipe, not into the room. Liquids either evaporate, drain to a small absorption trench, or are collected separately depending on the model.

Self-contained vs split systems

  • Self-contained units sit entirely in the bathroom — pedestal and composting chamber in one. Suited to cabins, studios and single-level slabs. Smaller capacity means more frequent emptying.
  • Split systems put the pedestal upstairs and a large composting chamber under the floor. Bigger capacity, longer composting time, less frequent handling — but they need under-floor space, which rules out most slab-on-ground homes unless designed in from the start.

Established Australian suppliers include Ecoflo (Nature Loo and the Clivus Multrum range) and various batch-style units; continuous systems compost in one chamber while you use the top, batch systems rotate sealed containers.

Council approval and AS/NZS 1546.2

Composting toilets are legal across Australia, but they're regulated like any other on-site system. Units are certified against AS/NZS 1546.2 (on-site domestic wastewater treatment units — waterless composting toilets), and most states require the model to hold that certification or a specific state health approval before a council will accept it. You still lodge an on-site wastewater application with the council — the composting toilet plus a greywater system are assessed together as one wastewater solution. Buying for a tiny home or shed?

Portable and cassette-style units used in a permanently occupied dwelling still count as the dwelling's toilet — councils can require an approved, certified system. Check before fitting out.

The greywater catch

Removing the toilet removes roughly a third of household wastewater and most of the pathogens — but the remaining shower, basin, kitchen and laundry water is still wastewater in the eyes of every regulator. On an unsewered block it must go to an approved greywater system: typically a small septic-style tank and subsurface trenches, or a dedicated greywater treatment unit. The good news is that the land application area is much smaller than a full septic needs, which is exactly why composting toilets rescue difficult blocks. Published Australian retail prices run from about $1,650 for a compact self-contained unit (Ecoflo's Nature Loo NL3) through $2,350–$4,750 for popular split systems, up to $10,000+ for large-capacity Clivus Multrum chambers. Add installation (vent, fan wiring, under-floor works), and critically add the greywater system — a modest greywater tank and trenches commonly costs $4,000–$10,000 installed. What emptying actually involves

This is the make-or-break question. On a family-sized split system, you'll typically remove finished compost every few months to once a year; small self-contained units need attention every few weeks. Finished material from a properly operated chamber looks and smells like damp soil, but state health rules are consistent about what happens next: bury it under at least 100 mm of soil around ornamental plants or trees — not on vegetable gardens — and keep it on your own property. Gloves, a shovel and 20 minutes is a fair description of the job when the system is run well; a system that's been overloaded or starved of bulking material is a much less pleasant story. Common questions

Do composting toilets smell?

A correctly installed unit with a working vent fan shouldn't smell indoors — the fan keeps air flowing down the pedestal and up the stack. Odour almost always traces to a stopped fan, blocked vent or too little bulking material.

Are composting toilets legal in Australia?

Yes, in every state and territory, provided the model is certified (AS/NZS 1546.2 or a state health approval) and your council approves the installation along with a compliant greywater arrangement.

Can I put the compost on my vegie garden?

No. Health guidelines require finished compost to be buried under at least 100 mm of soil around ornamentals or trees, on your own property — never on crops eaten raw.

Do I still need a septic tank for greywater?

Do composting toilets need power?

Most use a small continuous vent fan of a few watts, available in 12 V for off-grid solar setups. Some batch units are fully unpowered but rely on taller vent stacks and careful siting.
