Septic tanks and absorption trenches: the conventional system explained

The conventional septic system — a buried tank plus absorption trenches — has handled Australian household wastewater for over a century, and on the right block it's still the cheapest system to buy and by far the cheapest to run. No power, no motors, no quarterly service contract. The catch: it needs soil that drains, space for trenches, and setbacks from bores and waterways, which is exactly what the soil and site assessment checks before your council will approve one.

How a septic system works

Everything from the house drains to a watertight tank — usually 3,000 litres or more for a family home, built to AS/NZS 1546.1 in concrete or polyethylene. Inside, gravity does the treatment: solids sink to the bottom as sludge, fats and oils float to the top as scum, and anaerobic bacteria slowly digest both. The clarified liquid in the middle — still effluent, not clean water — flows out to the land application area whenever new wastewater pushes in.

The trenches do the real work

The tank only does primary treatment. The absorption trenches (also called leach drains in WA, or a disposal field) are where effluent is actually cleaned: it seeps out of slotted pipe or arch sections into gravel, then into the surrounding soil, where microbes strip out pathogens and nutrients. Trench sizing isn't guesswork — AS/NZS 1547:2012 sets design loading rates by soil category, from free-draining sands down to heavy clays. That's why the soil test comes first: a clay block might need three times the trench length of a sandy one, or fail outright.

Trenches run in parallel lines on contour, with council-set buffer distances from boundaries, buildings, dams, bores and waterways. If the assessment shows the soil or setbacks won't work, you're looking at a sand filter or an AWTS instead.

Which blocks suit a septic

  • Space: room for the trench field plus a reserve area for future replacement — many councils require the reserve to be shown on the plan.
  • Soil: loams and sands are ideal; heavy clay, rock near the surface or a high water table push you to other systems.
  • Slope and setbacks: flatter is easier; steep or waterfront blocks often trigger secondary-treatment requirements.
  • Owner temperament: if you want a system you can largely ignore between pump-outs, this is it.

Check your council

Some councils no longer approve new all-waste septic-and-trench systems in environmentally sensitive catchments, even where the soil passes. Confirm what's approvable before you order a tank — see the rules in your state.

What it costs in 2026

For a straightforward new install on a family home, most Australian quotes land between $8,000 and $18,000 including the tank, trenches and installation. Industry pricing guides put the common middle of the market around $12,000–$17,000; installers such as Express Wastewater publish ranges of $7,000–$15,000 for tank-and-trench packages on new builds. Rock excavation, long pipe runs, pumped systems (where the trenches sit uphill) and remote sites push it higher.

Maintenance: the easiest system to own

A septic has no moving parts (unless a pump well is involved), so ownership comes down to three habits: pump the tank out every three to five years before sludge carries over into the trenches (typically $300–$600), keep harsh chemicals and fats out of the drains, and keep vehicles and stock off the trench field. Common questions

How long does a septic tank last?

A concrete or poly tank commonly lasts 30–50 years. The trenches are the shorter-lived component at 15–25 years, so budget for eventual trench replacement rather than a whole new system.

Do septic systems smell?

Can I install a septic tank myself?

No. Every state requires council approval before installation and licensed plumbers/drainers to do the work, with inspections before backfill. DIY installs can be ordered out of the ground.

What size septic tank do I need?

Most homes use a tank of around 3,000 litres or larger, sized by bedroom count and expected daily flow under AS/NZS 1547. Your designer or council confirms the minimum — bigger tanks buy longer intervals between pump-outs.

Are septic additives worth buying?

No independent Australian testing shows additives replacing pump-outs or reviving failed trenches. The bacteria a tank needs arrive free of charge with every flush.
